It saves me from having to inspect each hole to see if it went deep enough. Tapping it again will follow the threads it just created. When the floating holder bottoms out, it starts creating thread, but the thread is nowhere deep enough. On that job, I just program the machine to tap every hole twice. On some holes, the tap won't start until it runs out of float. I MUST use a floating holder, and the floating holders are kind of weak. This is a problem for me when tapping 316L castings with an M6 roll tap on a machine that does not have rigid tapping. Problem is with form taps, at least larger ones (m6 or 1/4 and above), with looser floating holders, the tap may not start until it bottoms out. If your tension/compression type holder is "stiff" enough, you may be able to get away with using them with it. Make sure you pin gage the 5.8mm hole, it needs to be round and to that size, not tapered. Is the material slightly magnetic? It could be that is has too much stress from the mill and you might make some phone calls to your vendor to inquire about the heat treatment and stress relieving. In fact, when a ham dies, he/she is reverently referred to as a 'silent key'. As Miserable as this material could be, we halved cycle times moving away from cut taps and tapping fluid to rigid form tapping with standard soluble oil coolant. For many hams, the morse code is beautiful. There is a definite art to mastering the ways of the key. Many hams regard morse code to be the very essence of the hobby. Imo, thread milling is definitely not the solution, WAY too much cycle time. I would ditch the floating holder, these taps need rigidity. We would rigid tap with a canned cycle, straight to the bottom. I don't know if some shops do their own stress relieving pre-machining but it would make a massive difference, I'm sure. This material can be goddamn brutal depending on the stock. We would do a hundred plus holes with our form taps in 316ss bar stock using only synthetic cimcool(if I remember correctly) mixed to your standard concentration.ģ16 bar seemed to be a LOT more consistent (but definitely varied by quite a lot) than slab/plate/flat stock.
